There seems to be an awful lack of shunning in these parts.

So, why is Helvetica not shunned from overuse? Practically any other font, if used enough, becomes dated, "retro" if you will, and is no longer considered acceptable. The reason Helvetica has made it this long is due to its neutrality. There are no serifs, no significant details, no connotations, nothing, that make it stand out. It i, in essence, the letters at their core. We see many fonts that are heavily rooted in Helvetica, because the letters are an ideal base for thousands of fonts. The font itself can be stretched, made bold, Italicized, and the like, but simply remains the very base of lettering. Fascinating, is it not?

Helvetica is the Font of Socialism

Just watched the film "Helvetica" on recommendation from my Professor. While it may not have been the most engaging of movies, it was by and large very useful, possibly the most useful thing I have done all week. In fact, I can probably squeeze out 3 blog posts from the content. So, first of all: What is Helvetica?

For those of you unfamiliar with Helvetica, it is by far the most commonly used font of all time. IN FACT- HEY! Here it is! Told you it was familiar. We see this font everywhere, it is nigh impossible to go a day without interacting with this font in some way. But we don't get sick of it, now do we? Isn't that fascinating? I mean, something we see on a daily basis, time and time again has got to get boring after a little bit. And yet, when we see it inevitably once more, there is no recoil in shock, no revulsion. Just acceptance. And that very feature is what makes it so useful, and to be considered by some the ultimate font. NEXT POST: Why is it, in fact, so common/useful/non-revolting. See you in the next post!

Musik

Looking at the various musical posters, I have Identified a few key elements that I want to incorporate. Aside from some basic designs, things like pictures are not allowed. I want to have a visual style more like the below image in regards to how the text dominates with simple designs. I may opt out and do something more illustrative like the second image.

Let's get this show on the road

Alright, so this is me, getting this blog running. For anyone who doesn't know what this is, you probably won't be that thrilled, as this is a class blog. It may, however, become something more... if I actually blog on a regular basis. So, without further ado:
FIrst impressions of Typography Class. So far, I am seeing similarities to my Computer graphics class from last semester. The examples are quite daunting, not sure if I can match that by the end of this class. But, that is a sucky way to look at this. Instead, I will aim to master the art style by then! Sorry, no pictures this time around. I plan on doing some research in the next post.
